Orlando man accused of murder in child abuse case from 2001

2-year-old suffered injuries that killed her 22 years later, deputies say.

ORLANDO, Fla. – Over two decades after a child abuse case was opened in Orlando, a man has been accused of murder, according to the police department.

In a news release, police said they responded to the area of West Colonial Drive and North John Young Parkway on Oct. 24, 2001, as part of the child abuse investigation.

The victim in that case, Saundra Young, who was only 2 years old at the time, suffered injuries that ultimately led to her death on Dec. 24, 2023, police said.

Orlando police on Friday announced that Gregory Fields, 44, was arrested on a charge of first-degree murder.

He was being held without bond.

No additional information has been provided at this time, including the nature of the child abuse case or the injuries Young suffered.
