VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – A former Volusia County deputy has been arrested as part of a fraud investigation, according to Sheriff Mike Chitwood.
In a release, Chitwood said that the former deputy — identified as Douglas Meyer, 37 — now faces a charge of organized scheme to defraud.

“Meyer thought he could get away with a check kiting scheme, where he wrote himself bad checks from one credit union to another, accessing funds by exploiting the time it takes for checks to clear,” Chitwood explained.

Deputies said that Meyer even showed up at one of his credit unions while in uniform, asking for the hold on his deposited checks to be released.
According to the sheriff’s office, Meyer worked for the agency from 2020-2024, and again this year until he resigned in August.
However, his credit union reported the fraud to the sheriff’s office in September, kicking off an investigation into the scheme, investigators added.
Chitwood said that Meyer turned himself in on Sunday.
“This ex-deputy’s badge will be melted down,” Chitwood stated.
Volusia County Corrections officials said that Meyer was booked at 4:45 p.m. on Sunday, though he was released less than an hour later.
