OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. – Osceola County officials said they will install several additional red-light camera systems before the end of the year, expanding a network of automated enforcement devices that is already heavily concentrated in Central Florida.
Gary Yeager, Osceola County’s Traffic Operations Director, identified some of the new camera locations as Narcoosee Road at Jack Brack Road, County Road 192 at Cross Prairie Drive, and Poinciana Boulevard at Oren Brown Avenue. Yeager said the county works with the sheriff’s office to target intersections that generate the most citations.
“We work with the sheriff’s office to identify which intersections they have the most tickets that they’re issuing,” Yeager said.
Florida currently has red-light cameras at 167 intersections, with approximately half located in the Central Florida region. County officials say the cameras deter speeding and generate revenue. However, state crash data calls into question their effect on overall safety.
Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FHSMV) data for 2024 show 17,903 crashes recorded at locations before cameras were installed and 18,615 crashes afterward — an increase in reported collisions following camera deployment.
Yeager says enforcement discourages speeding and red-light running and is successful in the county. According to the county, ticketing revenue for the most recent fiscal year totaled about $511,000; roughly half of that sum is remitted to the state while the remainder stays with the county.
“The people who are violating the speed limit are going through the red lights. They’re the ones paying for this,” Yeager said. “They fund it. ”
Osceola County officials said the new cameras will be operational by year’s end, and that the sheriff’s office will continue to provide input on enforcement priorities as the program expands.
Some cameras will be at new locations, while others will be relocated due to construction projects.
