Jail calls, financial records among evidence to be introduced in Lopez trial, court filings show

OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. – The prosecutors overseeing the criminal case against suspended Osceola County Sheriff Marcos Lopez and his estranged wife appear poised to introduce as evidence recorded jail calls between the defendants, as well as financial records, according to new court filings.

Prosecutors filed a discovery exhibit last Friday, listing names of witnesses and papers or objects they said they have obtained and plan to present at trial.

The suspended sheriff and Robin Severance Lopez are charged with racketeering in connection with an alleged illegal gambling enterprise. Three of their co-defendants have since taken plea deals and agreed to testify for the prosecution.

One of the items outlined in the state’s exhibit is “recorded jail calls with communications between Robin Severance Lopez and Marcos Lopez.”

Severance Lopez was re-arrested late last month after allegedly giving false or misleading information in connection with an application to modify her bail conditions.

A judge revoked her $400,000 bond and remanded Severance Lopez to the Lake County Jail, where she remains.

The filing also named three “Category A Witnesses,” including the candidate services coordinator for Osceola County Supervisor of Elections and employees at a construction company.

In the filing, prosecutors offered a glimpse into their interest in speaking to the witnesses of the construction company, Snow Construction.

Prosecutors claimed that Severance Lopez contacted Snow Construction in May of 2022, expressing interest in purchasing a home.

“Robin provided a $2500 lot reservation fee during her first visit to Snow Construction,” the filing stated. “Robin made all selections for the construction of the home, and the staff had minimal contact with Marcos Lopez.”

The document also included more context on the purpose of calling a previously listed witness, an employee at City Kia of Orlando.

Prosecutors wrote that the employee sold Severance Lopez a $57,000 Kia Telluride.

“Marcos wrote a $5K check and either Robin or Marcos provided $5K in cash toward an initial deposit,” the filing stated.

Other items listed as evidence to be introduced at trial included mortgage and deed documents, recordings of interviews with co-defendants Sheldon Wetherholt and Sharon Fedrick, the marriage certificate of the now-estranged couple, and certified copies of pleadings in their dissolution of marriage.

Attorneys for Lopez and Severance Lopez will appear virtually before a judge Tuesday for a “plea negotiation conference.”

Mary Ibrahim, Marcos Lopez’s attorney, explained that this is equivalent to a “status hearing,” and emphasized that her client will not be taking a plea Tuesday.
