Washout from Sunday’s storms shuts down Crown Point Road in Ocoee

Road shut down near Fullers Cross Road

OCOEE, Fla. – A busy Ocoee road is closed after heavy rain caused a washout.

East Crown Point Road is washed out just north of East Fullers Cross Road in Ocoee. The road is closed in both directions.

Orange County officials say the road remains closed because of the torrential rains from Sunday’s storms.

Traffic north of the closure is being detoured at Ocoee Apopka Road, while traffic south of the closure is being detoured onto East Fullers Cross Road.

Crews with Orange County are working to stabilize and repair the road. The county says repairs could take up to four weeks to complete.

Two charter schools are in that area: Hope Charter School and Legacy High Charter School.

There are also several churches and businesses along Crown Point Road.

Winter Garden resident Rick Tischler says, “It’s just a headache. It’s an inconvenience. It should have been done better the first time.”

Tischler says it’s not the first time the road’s been closed due to weather.

“We got quite a bit of rain last year after Milton Weeks. It was washed out for a couple of weeks. Then they did the repair, and we said for a while, this thing is gonna go again the next big rainstorm.”

Unfortunately, he was right.

Now, the Orange County Roads and Drainage Division says it will take three to four weeks to repair the damage.

Winter Garden resident Tony Gonzalez says, “It’s costing me a lot of time.”

Now that his shortcut to get to Apopka is closed, it takes him an extra 20 minutes to get there.

“I have to go way down south to get on the highway to get around it—to go up to Apopka.”

Several residents say Orange County crews have made repairs for years, but it seems like nothing changes.

Gonzalez added, “There’s always construction on that road, always. It’s so bumpy. I don’t know why they don’t just tear the whole road up and put a new one in.”

Even though it’ll take a while, many people hope the roadway will finally be fixed for good.

Sunday’s storms damaged several roads across Central Florida.

The National Weather Service said Ocoee recorded over 4 inches of rain on Sunday.
