Can cyclists ride their bikes on the sidewalk in Florida? Trooper Steve has the answer

News 6 viewers ask traffic questions

ORLANDO, Fla. – News 6 traffic safety expert Trooper Steve Montiero answers viewer questions about the rules of the road every week, helping Orlando-area residents become better drivers by being better educated.

A viewer asked: Are bicycles allowed to operate on a sidewalk and are they allowed to travel on the opposing side?

Trooper Steve says this is a good question that is easy to answer.

“A bicyclist can operate on the sidewalk anytime they would like,” he said. “The thing a bicyclist must remember is that they must yield the right of way to any pedestrian walking on that sidewalk, meaning they should be moving out of the way for people who are walking.”

Montiero also says that when it comes to riding your bicycle on the opposing side of the roadway, that would be allowed as long as you are not in the physical travel lane.
