UCF students return to campus for spring semester during COVID-19 pandemic

Staff, students who return in-person have been asked to get a COVID-19 test or self-quarantine.

ORLANDO, Fla. – The University of Central Florida kicked off its spring semester Monday, with more students returning to campus.

Staff and students who return in-person have been asked to get a COVID-19 test or self-quarantine.

Friday, on-campus housing students got these mandatory rapid tests before being allowed to check inside their dorms.

Students who test positive during these have two options, quarantine back home or isolate in designated on-campus housing.

Other Knights are prepared for a semester back in the classroom, understanding there will be some changes.

“Everyone is going to be a little more cautious. We won’t sit close together, but I think it’s going to be much better than online learning personally I didn’t get much from online learning,” Gabriel Johnson said.

Meanwhile, other students have chosen to finish off the academic year virtually.

Tyler Hostlermathis, 20, said he’s switching to online classes for the spring semester. He explained how things have changed on campus because of the coronavirus.

“I came freshman year and instantly 70,000 people running around, like an ant farm,” he said. “Then the next fall hits and it’s empty.”

UCF also recently announced its received their initial batch of 1,000 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. It plans to give the shots to UCF healthworkers, and also faculty, staff and students over 65 who want them.

The appointments are supposed to start on Tuesday.
