When colleges, universities will reopen after Hurricane Ian

Now that Ian has passed, schools are assessing damage

ORLANDO, Fla. – With Hurricane Ian now out of the way, colleges are assessing any damage and looking at when they will reopen.

BARRY UNIVERSITY - UPDATED Sunday, 11:40 a.m.

Barry University’s campuses in Orlando, Ocala and Tampa will reopen and resume in-person operations on Monday, Oct. 3.

BETHUNE-COOKMAN UNIVERSITY - UPDATED Sunday, 9 p.m.

Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach evacuated its campus last Monday before the storm. The school says the campus will remain closed for the rest of this week as it assesses damage and allows students to deal with the recovery process.

DAYTONA STATE COLLEGE

Daytona State College plans to reopen all classes and campus activities on Monday, Oct. 3.

EMBRY RIDDLE AERONAUTICAL UNIVERSITY - UPDATED Friday, 12 p.m.

Operations at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University will reopen Saturday, Oct. 1. Classes are set to resume Monday, Oct. 3.

Students should report travel delays to their professors and make arrangements to cover class work.

FULL SAIL UNIVERSITY

Full Sail University announced on Friday its campus will return to full operations at 9 a.m. Saturday. At that time, school officials said classes will resume and on-campus faculty and staff may return to the campus.

University officials said there may be some changes to students’ schedules as the administration works to reschedule classes. Anyone with questions is asked to contact student support by emailing studentsupport@fullsail.edu or by calling 855-374-3572.

In addition to classes being canceled during Ian, a virtual graduation ceremony on Thursday and an in-person ceremony on Friday were also canceled.

LAKE-SUMTER STATE COLLEGE - UPDATED Sunday, Oct. 2

Lake-Sumter State College says it will resume normal operations on Monday, Oct. 3 and all classes will resume.

NOVA SOUTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY

The university’s Orlando campus will be closed at the end of business Tuesday through Sunday, Oct. 2.

Normal classes and building operations are expected to resume on Monday, Oct. 3.

POLK STATE COLLEGE - UPDATED Sunday, Oct. 2

All of Polk State College’s campuses and centers will reopen Monday, including collegiate high schools and on-campus dual enrollment and online classes.

Updates will be provided on polk.edu and through local and social media.

“The College also encourages students to communicate with their professors. Faculty and staff will be exercising flexibility as the community continues to recover from the impacts of the storm.”

ROLLINS COLLEGE - UPDATED Sunday, Oct. 2

Rollins College in Winter Park is reopening the campus at 5 p.m. Sunday. Faculty may hold virtual classes Wednesday, Oct. 5 through Friday, Oct. 7. In-person classes begin Wednesday, Oct. 12.

SEMINOLE STATE COLLEGE - UPDATED Friday, 12 p.m.

Seminole State College said the campus will remain closed, but all classes will resume on Monday, Oct. 3. Students should not come to campus this weekend.

Students and staff will be notified of any updates at sem.st/alert.

STETSON UNIVERSITY - UPDATED Saturday, 4:20 p.m.

University officials announced Saturday afternoon the campus will resume normal operations on Monday, Oct. 3.

Stetson University said it expects the entire campus to have power restored by Monday.

Undergraduate and counselor education graduate classes for next week Monday through Wednesday will largely move online. There was already a scheduled fall break and no classes Thursday or Friday.

For classes that can’t be moved online, students who are not able to attend will be given an alternative.

When in-person instruction is possible, students who are not able to engage in-person for whatever reason will have access to an alternate option.

Residential students are returning to campus, especially student athletes, many of whom will have practice with their teams on Sunday and Monday. Some students may be relocated from the few remaining residential buildings on campus without power, such as House F and House 205 at 205 E. University Ave.

Stetson University also said electricity has been restored to most of the DeLand campus. The university’s cooling plant is also operating and providing air-conditioning to buildings, although not yet at full capacity, and Wi-Fi is available, wherever there is power on campus.

Facilities Management staff are checking all campus buildings for damage and water intrusion.

The university previously said it was closing its Gulport and Tampa campuses Tuesday through Thursday. Stetson’s DeLand campus will cancel undergraduate classes Wednesday through Friday, as well as graduate classes in the College of Arts and Sciences. Online grad business classes will be “asynchronous” for the week.

Housing will remain open, but residential students should look for specific info from campus staff.

UNIVERSITY OF CENTRAL FLORIDA - UPDATED Saturday, 7:45 p.m.

The University of Central Florida now plans to reopen class on Tuesday, Oct. 4.

The university previously said it would resume normal operations on Monday, Oct. 3, but upon “several of our local school districts have conducted assessments,” decided to delay the reopening.

Students who already returned to campus will have access to dining, recreation and wellness, and other student services, university officials said.

Students will be updated about any changes through the UCF Alert system.

VALENCIA COLLEGE - UPDATED Sunday, Oct. 2

Valencia College announced on social media that the college campuses will reopen Tuesday, Oct. 4.

Originally the college was expected to reopen Monday.

KEISER UNIVERSITY - Updated Sunday, Oct. 2

Keiser University announced that campuses in Orange, Brevard and Volusia counties will resume classes on Monday, Oct. 3.
