Onwuachi will discuss his first cookbook, ‘My America: Recipes from a Young Black Chef’

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Orange County Library System announced that they are hosting chef and author Kwame Onwuachi at their “meet the author” event.

According to a news release, the author and James Beard Award-winning chef will discuss his first cookbook, “My America: Recipes from a Young Black Chef,” which showcases the diversity of American food.

The event will be held at the Orlando Public Library located at 101 East Central Boulevard on Sunday, Feb. 19 from 2-3 p.m.

Onwuachi – also a former Top Chef contestant – is the former executive chef at Kith/Kin and owner of the Philly Wing Fry franchise in Washington, D.C., according to the release. He trained at the Culinary Institute of America and had opened five restaurants before turning 30.

He was born on Long Island and raised in New York City, Nigeria and Louisiana. Onwuachi said he was first exposed to cooking by his mother in the kitchen of the family’s Bronx apartment, sparking a passion that he shaped into a career in fine dining.

Onwuachi’s also authored “Notes from a Young Black Chef” which documented the story of his “culinary coming-of-age” and detailed his experiences with the intersection of race, fame and food.

His latest book, and first cookbook, features over 125 recipes that explore the food of the African diaspora through his own family history, the release states.

A book sale and signing will follow the event.
