Man accused of carjacking Uber driver, crashing car into Oviedo woods

Kyron Peterson, 19, faces charges of carjacking and grand theft

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. – An Oviedo man was arrested on Monday after allegedly carjacking an Uber driver and crashing the car, according to the Winter Springs Police Department.

In an arrest report, police said that around 11:20 p.m. on Sunday they responded to an apartment complex near 318 Courtney Springs Circle following reports about the robbery.

Upon arrival, they found the Uber driver, who explained that she had driven two passengers — Kyron Peterson, 19, and his friend — back to the complex earlier that evening, the report shows.

According to investigators, the Uber driver had been asked to make two stops, so she waited outside the apartment building as Peterson went inside to “grab something.”

After Peterson returned to the car, he began arguing with his friend, prompting the driver to end the ride, “as she was feeling uncomfortable continuing,” the report says.

However, Peterson put his hand in his pocket and began threatening the driver for her keys, leading the driver to believe he was armed, police said.

The report states that the driver threw the keys and fled, and Peterson left the complex in the driver’s car. Investigators said that the car held a wallet, a check, a driver’s license and several debit cards.

An Oviedo officer eventually found the stolen car near East State Road 419 and Oviedo Boulevard, and after a short chase, Peterson crashed the car into the woods near Long Acres Lane, police said.

The Uber driver’s keys and wallet were returned to her, and Peterson was ultimately taken into custody.

Peterson faces charges of carjacking with a weapon and grand theft stemming from the incident. On those charges, he is held on a bond of $52,000.
