‘Go out and vote:’ Osceola County Supervisor of Elections visiting schools to educate on voting

1,200 students in the county already registered this year

OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. – The Osceola County Supervisor of Elections said her staff is visiting nearly a dozen local high schools over the course of the next several months to try and get students to register to vote.

Last week, the teams visited Poinciana High School.

“I think it makes you a better voter and I’m a firm believer if we have a voter at 18, we got a voter for life,” said Mary Jane Arrington, Osceola County Supervisor of Elections.

She explained the importance of educating students about the different types of elections including the Presidential Preference Primary Election.

“They don’t follow politics like some of us and they are unaware of the candidates running except maybe for the main ones. A lot of our young people are registering with no party affiliation so they are not going to be able to vote in the presidential preference primary,” Arrington said.

According to the Osceola County Supervisor of Elections office, 18,776 residents between the age of 18 to 25 voted in the 2020 general election.

“We talk about choosing your party, the three ways to vote, how to mark your ballot,” Arrington said.

The Osceola County Supervisor of Elections was able to register about 1,200 students in the county so far this school year.

“If you’re not part of the choice, then you can’t complain, you know, this is your choice, your people don’t always win but maybe next time they will,” she said.

The next visit is scheduled for NeoCity Academy on Jan. 31st. Other schools include:

  • Feb. 2: Gateway High School
  • Feb. 7: St. Cloud High School
  • Feb. 14: PATHS
  • March 25: Liberty High School
  • April 10: Osceola High School
  • April 12: Osceola School for the Arts
