PALM BAY, Fla. – The Palm Bay City Council on Thursday will consider on a new agreement with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) to help make traffic flow more smoothly around the city.

If approved, the plan will link Palm Bay’s traffic signals to FDOT’s Intelligent Transportation System (ITS), which means the city will be able to better monitor and adjust traffic in real time.

In practical terms, the connection should allow for better synchronization of traffic lights on both major and local roads, aiming to cut down on frustrating stops at red lights, especially when you’re driving at the speed limit.

The move would be possible through a new wireless connection at the city’s Traffic Operations center, tying into an existing fiber link at I-95 and Malabar Road, officials said.

The project would cost $3,000 for the equipment, already covered by the city’s traffic operations funds.

Council members will vote on the agreement at the meeting.
