TITUSVILLE, Fla. – Titusville police on Friday morning fatally shot a man who allegedly threatened officers, according to a news release.
Officers responded around 6:50 a.m. to the area of South Washington Avenue and Country Club Drive, where a woman had called 911 to report an incident involving her estranged husband, the release states. The police department’s news release added the man had been ordered by a judge to have no contact with the woman.
Police determined the man, now identified as Karl Gibson, 45, was threatening and aggressively pursuing the woman as both traveled in separate vehicles southbound on South Washington Avenue, the release states.
Stop sticks were deployed as police pursued Gibson’s vehicle, yet he reportedly continued driving until reaching a home on Meadow Lark Drive. Once there, he exited the vehicle “displaying a weapon,” and police say that forced the officers to shoot.
Gibson was taken to a hospital and was pronounced dead around 8:08 a.m., the statement reads.
No other injuries were reported, police said, adding the Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate the shooting while the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office works the crime scene investigation.
Titusville Mayor Andrew Connors said on social media that Gibson had been the focus of “a recent series of domestic violence encounters over the last several weeks.”
