KISSIMMEE, Fla. â Itâs an event thatâs giving visitors a chance to get up close with Hollywood icons. These actors though, run on four wheels.
âItâs a celebrity itself. Itâs a movie star. Itâs one of the best Porscheâs ever made and itâs got the Steve McQueen history,â Mecum Auctions COO Sam Murtaugh said.
The 1969 Porsche 917K racer is the headliner for Mecum Auctions car show in Kissimmee. Itâs got the recognizable blue paint, orange stripes and number 20 livery. It was originally purchased by Steve McQueen and featured in the movie La Mans, filmed in France. McQueen played the main character in the fast-paced drama about the 24-hour endurance race. The legendâs autograph is on the door with the message: âfinished thanks for staying together.â
After the film, the car would go on to have a successful racing career before retirement in 1974.
The car has since had several owners including race car driver, Reinhold Joest, Brian Redman, Richard Attwood and Frank Gallogly.
After nearly 24 years of ownership, comedian Jerry Seinfeld is giving someone else a chance to hold on to the iconic racecar.
âA lot of collectors refer to themselves as stewards and not necessarily owners of the car, but stewards of history. They own it and hold on to that history and there comes a point in time when they want to pass it on and let someone else hold this piece of history,â Murtaugh said.
The car will hit the auction block Saturday, Jan. 18. Car enthusiasts are estimating it will sell for more than $20 million. Itâs just one of nearly 5,000 vehicles featured at Mecum Auctions in Kissimmee.
âYou donât have to be a multimillionaire, you donât have to be in the market to buy a car at all. Just come and walk around the acres and acres of cars. Itâs fun to come and observe. Itâs more than an auction, itâs a car show,â Murtaugh said. âEvery one of these cars has a story and itâs really what people gravitate towards.â
The auto show has everything from the classics, to new and unique rides. You can even check out a fully-armored presidential limo used in the 1990s.

âIf youâre a car person, I hope youâre leaving this event feeling fulfilled by all the cars you got to see and touch and observe, but really the community and people here... Itâs very welcoming and comfortable place to be,â Murtaugh sai.
The auto show runs through Sunday, Jan. 19.
