ORLANDO, Fla. – The University of Central Florida suspended two fraternities as it investigates multiple reports of “dangerous and degrading” hazing incidents, a school spokesperson said Tuesday.

UCF put Sigma Chi and Delta Upsilon on interim organizational suspension, which are currently under active investigation by UCF police for felony hazing. The national chapters have also temporarily suspended the school frats.

Crime logs for the UCF Police Department list several hazing incidents in the past several months at four locations in UCF’s Greek life areas.

The oldest occurred in November at a fraternity house off campus, while UCF’s main campus was closed. The incident was reported on Jan. 22.

A second case, listed as college hazing — risk of injury or death, allegedly occurred on campus at the Sigma Chi house itself. The log says the incident occurred between Feb. 3 and Feb. 24, and was reported on March 7.

A third incident, reported as hit and run — leaving the scene of a crash involving damage to property, as well as college hazing with risk of injury or death, occurred on Feb. 24 on campus.

The fourth hazing incident was reported on March 4.

Since the investigation is still active, details of the allegations are not available.

“UCF unequivocally condemns hazing in all forms, and we are committed to holding individuals and organizations accountable for actions that threaten the safety and well-being of our students and others,” said Courtney Gilmartin, assistant vice president of Strategic Initiatives and Communications.

Gilmartin also said the fraternities' suspensions barred them from on and off-campus activities, including recruitment and social events.

Sigma Chi and Delta Upsilon are the latest fraternities to be under review because of alleged hazing.

Last month, UCF confirmed it was reviewing an incident at Phi Gamma Delta, involving the use of hate symbols. The 2023 case was originally reported by the student-run Knight News.
