Replace your bathroom mirror in 20 minutes

Step-by-step instructions

OCOEE, Fla. – Travis in Ocoee asked us to put a new bathroom mirror up over his vanity. He took the old one out by himself by removing the screws and clips holding it in place. Fortunately, the new mirror he purchased uses hidden clips to hold it in place.

If you have a project you’d like Erik to tackle, send us an email at GettingResultsAtHome@wkmg.com and next week Erik might just show up at your door!

We purchased:

  • Nothing - Travis bought the new mirror

We brought with us:

  • Electric screwdriver
  • Electric drill
  • Measuring tape
  • Stud finder

Step 1

Find the studs in the wall.

We used our studfinder for this.

Run the studfinder along the wall right about where you expect to install the hidden mirror clips. Wherever it beeps, draw some lines so you know where the wooden stud behind the wall starts and stops.

Step 2

Measure.

We decided to sit Travis' mirror on the granite backsplash piece that sits on top of his vanity. We’re using the backsplash as a base instead of just relying on the mirror clips to hold the mirror in place adding stability and taking the majority of the weight off the clips. We did a test - we held the clips in place on the back of the mirror where they would be seated. Then, we measured from the screw holes on the clips down to the bottom of the mirror. That measurement - 37 and 1/4 inches - told us exactly where we need to mark screw holes on the wall above the backsplash. We then measured 37 and 1/4 inches from the top of the backsplash (where the mirror will sit) up the wall and marked a screw hole for the bracket in between the studs.

Step 3

Screw in the screws.

Slide each screw through the hole on the bracket and screw it into the spot that you marked on the wall and screw all the way into the stud behind the drywall. It may help you to drill a small pilot hole before you try to screw in the screw. Do this for all four screws (two for each bracket).

Step 4

Lift the mirror in place.

Carefully slide the mirror up the wall over the brackets and then carefully allow the mirror to slide back down the wall - making sure it catches the brackets on the wall - and let it rest on the backsplash. It should now be sitting with most of its weight on the backsplash and at the same time held in place on top by the hidden brackets up against the wall.
