SANFORD, Fla. – Sanford’s stinkiest nightmare might be over.

The city on Friday announced the installation of a permanent component to the North Water Reclamation Facility, saying residents should notice an improvement in their olfactory situation as the system stabilizes.

News 6s Seminole County community correspondent Catherine Silver reported that residents began noticing the foul smell in September near the downtown area.

The city said an odor control unit at the plant near Lake Monroe went down, one of many repairs the plant needed, and it was going to take time to replace the unit.

The city installed a temporary fix in October, but that exhaust fan went failed a couple of weeks ago.

The new piece was manufactured especially for the plant, and city officials say it should restore the facility to “its intended operating standards.”
