Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis to announce presidential run on Twitter with Elon Musk

Musk suggested last year he would support DeSantis for president

ORLANDO, Fla. – Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Wednesday will announce his 2024 presidential campaign in a Twitter Spaces event with Elon Musk, according to multiple reports.

Multiple media outlets, including CBS News and The Associated Press, reported that DeSantis, long been seen as Donald Trump’s leading rival for the Republican nomination, will reveal his plans in an audio conversation with the owner of Twitter.

Musk, speaking Tuesday at The Wall Street Journal’s CEO Summit event in London, seemed to confirm the news, saying DeSantis would be making “quite an announcement’ on Twitter the next day. “The first time something like this is happening on social media,” with real time questions and answers, he said.

Musk said last year that he supported DeSantis as a presidential candidate, but added Tuesday that he is not endorsing any particular candidate at this time.

On Tuesday evening, DeSantis’ wife, Casey DeSantis, tweeted a video of DeSantis with the phrase “America is worth the fight: TEXT LAUNCH TO 512345.”

When that number is messaged, it results in a response that reads: “Thank you for subscribing to receive texts from Ron DeSantis for President.”

News 6 political correspondent Jim Clark said that announcing Ron DeSantis’ campaign on Twitter could reach younger voters, but it might also miss an important demographic.

“It could be limited in terms of numbers of voters that he’s trying to reach,” Clark said. “Remember: Republican primary voters skew older, and they may not be as in-touch with social media like Twitter as younger people are, so he might miss a group of voters that will be important to him.”

It’s believed DeSantis will follow the virtual announcement with a public appearance a few days later in Dunedin, DeSantis’ hometown.
