Jason White: How government contracts turned a gas station attendant into an entrepreneur

ORLANDO, Fla. – This week on “Black Men Sundays,” host Corie Murray interviews Jason White, a self-described serial entrepreneur who started out as a gas station attendant and has since secured hundreds of federal government contracts.

White’s focus has been on performance through and through, a work ethic that saw him striving to be the best at any given role even before he started making real money.

“I was trying to be the best gas station attendant because I don’t believe in looking past what you’re doing right now. I really believe in, ‘If this is what I’m doing right now, I’m gonna be the best at it and can’t nobody take that away from me,’” he said. “My homeboy came to the gas station and talked to me about getting a government contract in trucking and I didn’t know what he was talking about (...) it’s back in 2008, I ain’t know what he was talking about. He asked me to hit him up when I got off so he could tell me a little bit more, but when I got off, he got locked up. So I had to really go to YouTube university and I’m all self-taught. No guidance, no mentor, no nothing.”

White wrote a book that published last year, “The Unconventional Path to Success: How to Build a Multi-Million Dollar Empire with Self-Education,” which lends itself to his self-taught journey. He otherwise went to Norfolk State, but he said he didn’t know what to do while he was there besides work on his communication and networking skills. This, as it turned out, would later pay great dividends.

He currently has 42 active contracts with the federal government and gets paid to do all sorts of things, thanks in part to those communication skills he honed.

“Whatever we need outside the federal government, the federal government needs that in the form of a contract. So we talking about digital content, we talking about real estate, we talking about janitorial, lawn care services, hair cuts, wig making, apparel, dry cleaning, roofing, construction, pavement, design; whatever you can think of, the federal government has a contract for. I just figured out how I can marry my communication skills with the fact that there’s a company that needs to be in bed with the federal government.”
