Captain America to lead Daytona 500 as grand marshal

Marvel star Anthony Mackie to kick off iconic Florida race

In a thrilling announcement for racing and superhero fans alike, Anthony Mackie, known for his portrayal of Captain America, has been named the grand marshal for the 67th Daytona 500.

The race, which takes place on Feb. 16, coincides with the release of Mackie’s latest film, “Captain America: Brave New World,” hitting theaters just days before on Feb. 14.

Daytona International Speedway President Frank Kelleher expressed excitement over Mackie’s involvement, highlighting the synergy between the film’s release and the iconic race.

“Anthony’s energy and presence will add to the excitement,” said Kelleher, emphasizing the unique opportunity to have Mackie deliver the traditional “start your engines” command.

Mackie’s role as Captain America has solidified his place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with appearances in major films such as “Avengers: Endgame” and the Disney+ series “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.”

His participation in the Daytona 500 adds a Hollywood flair to the event, drawing attention from both racing enthusiasts and Marvel fans.

The Daytona 500 is actually a week-long spectacle, kicking off with qualifying rounds on Feb. 12. The excitement builds with the Duel At Daytona on Feb. 13, leading up to a weekend packed with races, including the Craftsman Truck Series and the NASCAR Xfinity Series.

Sunday’s main event will feature a performance by Grammy Award-winning artist Pitbull and a flyover by the USAF Thunderbirds.
