In the holiday season battle of big-budget family movies, Paramount Pictures’ “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” sped past the Walt Disney Co.’s “Mufasa: The Lion King” to take the top spot at the box office.

NEW YORK – The Walt Disney Co. will make a follow-up to the 2019 live-action “The Lion King,” with Barry Jenkins, the director of the Oscar-winning “Moonlight” and the James Baldwin adaptation “If Beale Street Could Talk,” set to direct. The new “Lion King” grossed more than $1.6 billion worldwide, so a sequel was perhaps always likely. Less expected was a “Lion King” with Jenkins directing. The film, Disney said, will explore the mythology of “The Lion King,” including Mufasa's origin story. Disney didn't announce any further plot details or casting on the new “Lion King” project, which was first reported by Deadline Hollywood.

“Star Wars” fans are getting excited about a new release. Disney+ is debuting a new eight-part docuseries called “Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian.”It's a behind-the-scenes look at how the popular “Mandalorian” series was created, including interviews and never-before-seen footage. Executive producer Jon Favreau hosts the series, which debuts May 4, the day fans celebrate all-things "Star Wars." After that, Disney+ will stream new episodes every Friday.

Available for pre-order, Baby Yoda now is. Disney’s online store is accepting orders for new toys featuring the character, including an 11-inch plush doll and two bobbleheads. Just don't expect them in time for Christmas as the products won't ship until spring. Baby Yoda, who took the internet by storm last month, is a nickname fans gave the break-out character "The Mandalorian." Fans wondered why toys featuring such an obviously marketable "Star Wars" character weren't immediately available.
