ORLANDO, Fla. – News 6 traffic safety expert Trooper Steve Montiero answers viewer questions about the rules of the road every week, helping Central Florida residents become better drivers by being better educated.

Trooper Steve was asked on Thursday, “What are the rules when it comes to the double yellow line?”

He said while traffic laws, such as those associated with the double yellow line, are important to remember and there for a reason, there are exceptions to every rule.

Typically, when traveling on a roadway, the double yellow line indicates a no passing zone, but what happens if your home is located on the other side of this no passing zone?

“Florida law allows you to cross this double yellow line to gain access to any public or private driveway,” Trooper Steve said. “Of course, you as the driver are required to use caution when doing something like this. Even though you are allowed to do the turn by law, as we see many times here in Florida, not all drivers are paying attention.”
