ORLANDO, Fla. – News 6 traffic safety expert Trooper Steve Montiero answers viewer questions about the rules of the road every week, helping Orlando-area residents become better drivers by being better educated.
News 6 viewer Pamela asked, “Why are there no police enforcing the no texting and driving law in school parent lines?”
Trooper Steve said there is no definitive answer but the topic should be addressed.
“There are not enough law enforcement officers to put in your passenger seat to keep adults paying attention to what they should be doing when there are kids present,” he said. “It’s truly up to, really, a parent out there.”
He said if your vehicle is stopped in the car line and not moving, then you are allowed to be on your phone, just like you would be able to at a red light.
“If you’re moving and stuff like that, then put the phone down. If you’re a parent and you see this problem at your school, I’d contact the school resource officer. But at the end of the day, you’re an adult and you should be setting the example for your students,” he said.
