ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – For years, the Sand Lake Road interchange at I-4 has been one of Central Florida’s most congested and crash-prone areas. As a former patrol trooper, I personally responded to hundreds of crashes in this spot, making it clear that something needed to change.
To address these long-standing issues, a major roadway revamp introduced a diverging diamond interchange, a design aimed at improving traffic flow and reducing collisions. Now that it’s been in place for some time, it’s time to put it to the test.

How does a diverging diamond work?
A diverging diamond interchange shifts vehicles temporarily to the left side of the road, allowing for smoother left turns onto the highway without crossing opposing traffic. This design is intended to reduce congestion, improve safety and make navigation more efficient.
But is it really making a difference?
We’re taking a first-hand look at how this interchange performs in real traffic conditions.
Check back for the full Trooper Steve on Patrol as we drive through the diverging diamond and analyze whether it’s improving the flow or still causing confusion.
