OCALA, Fla. – An 18-year-old Marion County high school student was struck and killed Monday morning while she was walking to a bus stop, officials said.
Marion County Public Schools said Shannon Rushing, who was a senior at Forest High School, was struck from behind around 6:20 a.m. by an sport utility vehicle.
Ocala police said a 60-year-old woman was driving a Nissan SUV and hit Rushing, who was walking in the road. According to police, the driver is cooperating with the investigation and does not face criminal charges.
“We are heartbroken with this news and are supporting the family and school community during this difficult time,“ a social media post made by police stated.
Rushing previously attended Ward-Highlands Elementary and Howard Middle schools.
According to MCPS, school counselors described Rushing as “very personable, bubbly and well-liked by many, including her teachers and office personnel.”
School officials said Rushing had recently joined the Jesus Club on campus and was always encouraging others with her positive outlook.
Grief counselors are at the Forest High School to help students and staff cope with the tragedy.
An investigation into the crash is ongoing, police said.
