HAINES CITY, Fla. – Four people were injured, two critically, Monday night in a Polk County crash involving an ambulance and a pickup truck, officials said.
The wreck happened on U.S. 27 near Lucerne Park Road, just south of Haines City.
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office said the ambulance was taking a patient to a hospital when the wreck occurred. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office said the ambulance had its emergency equipment on as it approached a red light, slowed, looked both ways and entered the intersection.
The sheriff’s office says at the same time, a black Ford pickup truck pulling a trailer entered the intersection at “highway speed” and struck the ambulance.
All three people inside the Polk County Fire Rescue ambulance and the truck driver were taken to hospitals. Officials said a paramedic and the patient being transported were critically injured. The drivers of the vehicles are expected to make full recoveries.
Southbound U.S. Highway 27 was closed for five hours because of the crash.
Deputies are continuing the investigation.
