BAHAMAS – A woman sailing on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship that set sail from Port Canaveral was killed Tuesday in a shark attack while on a snorkeling excursion in the Bahamas, according to a cruise line spokesperson.
The woman, a guest on Harmony of the Seas, was attacked by a bull shark while on an independent shore excursion in Nassau, the cruise line said. The woman, whose name has not been released, was snorkeling with her family when she was attacked.

“Sadly, the guest passed away after arriving at a local hospital for treatment,” the cruise line said in a statement. “Royal Caribbean International is providing support and assistance to the guest’s loved ones at this time.”
Several media outlets have reported that the victim was a 58-year-old Pennsylvania woman. No other injuries were reported.
The beach where the attack occurred has been closed.
Harmony of the Seas is on a seven-night cruise, having set sail Sunday from Port Canaveral.
According to the International Shark Attack File, the odds of getting fatally attacked by a shark are less than 1 in 4 million.
Last year, there were 73 confirmed unprovoked shark attack cases worldwide, including 47 in the United States, which has the most documented unprovoked bites in the world, according to the International Shark Attack File.
