‘He shot me:’ 9-year-old woke up mother from nap after being shot in Pine Hills, affidavit shows

T’yonna Major was shot twice; her mother was shot once

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – A new document details the moments after a 19-year-old shot and killed a 9-year-old girl during a shooting spree last week in Pine Hills, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.

T’yonna Major died after being shot twice by Keith Moses, according to an arrest warrant affidavit released on Tuesday. Moses is also accused of fatally shooting 38-year-old Nathacha Augustin and Spectrum News 13 reporter Dylan Lyons, 24, and injuring the 9-year-old girl’s mother, whose name has not been released, and Spectrum News 13 photographer Jesse Walden.

A timeline in the affidavit shows that Moses entered a home on Harrington Drive through an unlocked back door around 3:53 p.m. and shot 9-year-old T’yonna. The girl’s mother, who was taking a nap, said she woke up to her daughter yelling, “He shot me,” as she ran into the bedroom, according to the affidavit.

The girl’s mother, whose name has not been released, said her daughter jumped into her bed when she heard two gunshots and felt a bullet hit her arm, the affidavit shows. The two hid in the bathroom until law enforcement officers arrived. The girl was able to tell her mother what the shooter looked like, according to the affidavit, and described him as having dreadlocks.

The woman told detectives the back door to the home is sometimes unlocked for letting their dog out, according to the affidavit. The girl’s mother called 911 and the girl was taken to Arnold Palmer Hospital, where she later died.

Moses later shot and killed Lyons and wounded Walden, who were reporting on the fatal shooting of Augustin, officials said.

Deputies arrested the 19-year-old and found he had a gun on him that was still hot to the touch, records show.

Moses faces charges of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder and armed burglary.
