BUNNELL, Fla. – Two teens were arrested on Wednesday night after they were seen trying to get into a Bunnell officer’s car, according to the police department.

In a release, police said an off-duty officer in the Grand Reserve neighborhood received alerts on his cell phone from his Ring video surveillance system around 11:30 p.m.

Using the system, the officer noticed two people trying to get into his vehicle, prompting the officer to come outside and confront them both, the release shows.

Police said the two people ran away, and another witness called 911.

Following a search, both people — a 16-year-old and a 17-year-old — were later found near 80 Fairway Court and taken into custody, police added.

Investigators said they discovered that two other vehicles in the neighborhood had been broken into, though nothing was reported stolen.

One of the teens was supposed to be spending the night with his grandmother, who didn’t live in that neighborhood, according to police.

Both teens face three counts of burglary and were later released to their parents, police said.

“This incident shows the value of home video surveillance systems in combination with a quick call to the police when suspicious activity is observed,” Bunnell Police Chief David Brannon said. “However, even the marked police vehicle near the caller’s home wasn’t enough to deter these two geniuses to avoid the area, and it didn’t work out well for them.”
