PORT ORANGE, Fla. – A Port Orange police officer is recovering after undergoing emergency eye surgery for an injury they suffered while arresting a burglary suspect on Saturday, according to a news release.
Officers responded to the Legacy at Crystal Lake Apartments for a call about vehicles being burglarized.

According to the release, when one of the officers located the suspects, they started running away.

Port Orange police said the officer was able to catch one of the suspects and during the struggle suffered an injury to his right eye.
The officer “was able to fight through the injury and still handcuff and take the suspect into custody,” the release said.
The officer was taken to ORMC where he received emergency surgery for his eye. He is currently recovering and is in stable condition, according to the release.

On July 27, 2024, officers responded to the Legacy at Crystal Lake Apartments due to a call of multiple vehicles being burglarized. Upon arrival, Officer Alevisatos located the suspects who began to run from him.
The other suspect was located and arrested by additional responding officers, according to police.
