Police charged 48-year-old Derick Jones Sr. with conspiracy to commit human trafficking, deriving support from proceeds of prostitution, and numerous felony drug charges. VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — A man who troopers say was walking in the lanes of U.S. Highway 1 in Volusia County was hit and killed by a truck early Monday morning. Troopers said the man was not in a marked crosswalk when he walked into the northbound lanes directly in the path of a 2017 Chevy Silverado north of I-95. Investigators said the driver of the truck was not injured and remained on the scene. The medical examiner’s office is working to identify the man. Troopers said the crash remains under investigation.

DELTONA, Fla. — A Deltona man and his girlfriend are accused of molesting a 2-year-old child who was in their care. Volusia County deputies said Jason Zeak, 35, and Andrea Shearin, 31, are each charged with one count of lewd or lascivious molestation, one count of lewd or lascivious exhibition and one count of child abuse. According to a police report, the incident was discovered after Zeak’s spouse learned about his extramarital affair with Shearin and obtained hundreds of text messages that included evidence of the abuse. Deputies said the specific relationship of the child and the couple is not being shared with the public to help protect their identity.

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — Central Florida deputies and U.S. Senator Rick Scott met in Volusia County to discuss the fentanyl crisis. Flagler County is home to about 125,000 residents, but Sheriff Rick Staly said the sheriff’s office seized enough fentanyl to kill all the people in the county and several more. Senator Rick Scott vowed Thursday to do whatever it takes to help law enforcement stop the fentanyl from making its way to Central Florida. Locally, sheriff’s offices said they would go full steam ahead in arresting those who bring the deadly narcotic to central Florida because too many people are dying, including youth.

DAYTONA BEACH SHORES, Fla. — Someone caused more than a million dollars in damage to the new system designed to protect dunes and homes on the Volusia County coast after Hurricane Nicole. State officials installed a dam as a temporary fix for Daytona Beach Shores, but Wednesday night, vandals damaged the dam. A tiger dam is orange tubes filled with ocean water stacked to create a barrier. Kay Eiler said that after the hurricane, the tiger dam will have a new solution if the next hurricane strikes again. ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — An Orange County sexual predator, who’s been in and out of prison and jail since the 1980s on various charges related to exposing himself, was arrested again last week. He was arrested in 2019 in Volusia County, in Orange County in 2020, in Ocoee last month and again last week. WFTV legal analyst Bill Sheaffer said the recidivism rate for people involved in these kinds of crimes is high. He was arrested in November after witnesses said he was sitting on a sign outside Burger King in Ocoee exposing himself. After getting out of jail, he was arrested on a similar incident from earlier in the year outside a coin laundry business in Orange County.

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — An off-duty Volusia County sheriff’s deputy was arrested in Seminole County and charged with driving under the influence. Florida Highway Patrol troopers pulled over Volusia County Deputy Julia Curtin Saturday at around 11:30 p.m. on Interstate 4, near State Road 46, due to her driving pattern. Following FHP’s investigation, Curtin was placed under arrest for DUI and transported to the Seminole County Jail. A newly announced joint venture between Tampa-based Onicx Group and Aries Capital hopes to fill that need and bring the space program to Volusia County. VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — Volusia County leaders sent a notice last week to terminate the county’s corrections director after allegations of misconduct. The county claims several employees reported to HR that Flowers yelled, disrespected them, and threatened their jobs.
