VIERA, Fla. – A Brevard County sheriff’s deputy shot and killed a man who had been involved in a domestic disturbance, officials said.
The fatal shooting happened around 2:45 a.m. Tuesday in the 1100 block of Egret Lake Way in Viera.

According to the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to the area for a domestic disturbance and learned that the man, identified as 55-year-old Robert Barry, had threatened a woman with a gun and knife.
The woman ran to a neighbor’s house for help, and deputies made contact with Barry, who was not cooperative with the investigation and was making threats, according to authorities.
Barry, who was holding a handgun, came out of his house around 3:45 a.m. and pointed the gun at deputies as they tried to negotiate with him, officials said.
The sheriff’s office said a deputy opened fire and struck Barry, who was taken to a hospital, where he died.
The names of the man and deputy are not being released at this time, officials said.
The deputy has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, which is normal procedure.
The investigation of the incident is ongoing and being conducted by the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office. Once complete, the investigative findings will be submitted to the Office of the State Attorney, 18th Judicial Circuit.
