‘You never think it’s going to happen to you:’ News 6 reporter recounts 2014 shooting at FSU

Molly Reed was on campus at time of shooting

ORLANDO, Fla. – Two people were killed and six were injured Thursday when the 20-year-old son of a sheriff’s deputy opened fire near the Student Union on the campus of Florida State University.

Sadly, it was not the first shooting to occur on the Tallahassee campus.

Molly Reed, a reporter for News 6, was an FSU student when three people were shot in 2014 before a gunman, a former student, was wounded by police.

Reed recalled the scene outside Strosier Library, where many students were gathered during finals week.

“These things happen when you least expect it,” Reed said. “You never think it’s going to happen to you, and for some reason, for FSU, this has happened yet again.”

Reed reflected on the broader implications, especially for students who have experienced similar tragedies.

“I found that there were some students in Parkland who are now students at FSU,” she noted. “For that to happen, I mean, it’s happening so often, unfortunately.”

As students cope with the emotional impact of Thursday’s shooting, Reed emphasized the importance of support and understanding.

“There are going to be a lot of emotions that these students have to work through, not just for the next days, but for the next years,” she said.
