Armed man caught at Deltona home, accused of threatening to kill 4 children

Trevor Nieves-Gonzalez, 22, faces charges of child abuse

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – An armed man was arrested at a Deltona home on Sunday afternoon after the suspect reportedly threatened to kill four children in the house, according to the Volusia Sheriff’s Office.

In a release, deputies said they responded to the home on Fowler Drive, where the man — identified as 22-year-old Trevor Nieves-Gonzalez — was found with a “large hunting knife.”

Investigators said that Nieves-Gonzalez had reportedly injured one person in the house already.

But when the first responding deputy arrived, Nieves-Gonzalez’s father placed himself between the suspect and the deputy, investigators added.

Body-camera footage released by the VSO shows the encounter, with the deputy telling the father to move out of the way as the deputy’s firearm is drawn.

“I’m not gonna let you shoot my son,” the father can be heard saying.

“I’m not gonna shoot him if he drops the knife!” the deputy shouts back.

Eventually, Nieves-Gonzalez can be seen throwing the knife to the ground. However, when deputies tell him to get on the ground, he instead yells, “(Expletive) you, (expletive)!” and spits at another responding deputy, the footage reveals.

In response, a deputy deployed his Taser on Nieves-Gonzalez, who was ultimately taken into custody, deputies said.

“The father was treated for injuries sustained prior to deputies’ arrival, including a wound to the back of his head from the knife,” the release reads.

The video also shows a deputy speaking with the suspect’s father after the encounter.

“He’s a good boy,” the father says.

“I understand. However, if someone has a lethal weapon, that’s deadly force,” the deputy explains. “I cannot Tase — I cannot go to my Taser. But once he dropped the knife, that’s when we de-escalated him."

Nieves-Gonzalez is being held on the following charges:

  • Aggravated battery with bodily harm
  • Resisting an officer with violence
  • Battery on a law enforcement officer
  • Child abuse (four counts)
  • Aggravated assault with intent to commit a felony (four counts)

He is now held on bond of $100,000.
