NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. – A woman is in custody after she reportedly threw coffee at a mother, her child and their dog last week, according to the Volusia Sheriff’s Office.
In an arrest affidavit, deputies said they were called to Quail Ranch Road on Friday morning in reference to the attack.
Upon arrival, deputies said they learned that the mother and her infant son had been walking the dog earlier that morning, when they approached a house with another woman and dog.
“At this time, (the mother’s) dog was not on a leash and was following closely alongside (the mother and son),” the affidavit reads.

However, the other woman — identified as Nina Jaaskelainen, 54 — allegedly began yelling at the mother to put her dog on a leash, deputies added.
Jaaskelainen then threw coffee at the mother’s dog while claiming her own dog had been killed before, the sheriff’s office noted.
An argument ensued, during which time Jaaskelainen reportedly came toward the mother and threw coffee on her and her son, deputies said.
Deputies also explained that dried coffee was observed on the mother, son and dog, and the mother had also recorded some footage of the incident on her cell phone.
“Nina confirmed that she had thrown coffee on (the mother’s) dog and denied intentionally throwing coffee on (the mother) and her baby,” the affidavit continues.

According to investigators, Jaaskelainen claimed that she threw the coffee on the dog because it was making her own dog upset, and she believed the mother, boy and other dog were on her property.
Jaaskelainen was taken into custody and faces two counts of battery.
Deputies said that Jaaskelainen, who was born in Finland, is in the country illegally and “subject to removal proceedings.”
As such, an ICE detainer was placed on Jaaskelainen, who remains in custody, according to jail records.
