VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – An arrest was made after a 47-year-old man was shot early Sunday near DeLand, according to the Volusia Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded shortly after 5 a.m. to the 1500 block of West New York Avenue, locating the man lying in a carport and finding he was conscious but had suffered gunshot wounds, the sheriff’s office said on social media.
The deputies stopped the victim’s bleeding before he was taken to a hospital, “where he was expected to survive,” the post states.
The suspected shooter, identified as Anselmo Salazar Colin, was detained on scene without incident. Witnesses who fled the shooting were later contacted at a nearby Winn-Dixie parking lot.
An investigation revealed that Salazar Colin shot his roommate following a night of drinking with friends and roommates. According to the arrest affidavit, Salazar had consumed about a dozen alcoholic beverages and a small amount of cocaine before the incident.
Witnesses described a struggle involving a firearm after Salazar suddenly produced a handgun and shot the victim at close range. Another man present was threatened with the gun during the altercation, but was able to disarm Salazar and discard the magazine before Salazar fled into the residence, the arrest affidavit states.
Salazar admitted to detectives that he acted in self-defense, citing rumors that the victim and another individual intended to kill him. He also disclosed having a brain tumor and having stopped taking prescribed medication, with friends noting increased paranoia, the arrest affidavit states.
Salazar was arrested and charged with attempted murder and aggravated assault.
Due to his status as an undocumented immigrant, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has been notified.
Salazar was being held without bond and is set to appear in a Volusia County court on Monday afternoon.
