‘An amazing offer:’ Thousands taken in lottery scam at Volusia County RV park

$1,000 reward offered for information on suspects seen in footage

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – Two men playing cards in an RV park near Ormond Beach were left without thousands of dollars after being approached by so-called lottery winners, according to the Volusia Sheriff’s Office.

In a release, deputies said the incident happened on Wednesday, when the suspects approached the men while claiming to have “just won the lottery.”

“These suspects had an amazing offer,” the release reads. “Whatever cash the victims had on hand, they’d double it.”

As a result, one of the victims retrieved $2,500 and handed it over. The other victim was about to hand over $5,000, though the money was quickly snatched out of his hand, deputies added.

Soon after, law enforcement was notified about what happened, and the suspects left, possibly in a gray/silver SUV, according to the VSO.

The sheriff’s office also released footage showing the individuals involved on foot. That video can be found at the top of this story.

Anyone with information on who the suspects are is urged to contact detectives at EastsideDetectiveUnit@volusiasheriff.gov or by calling (386) 299-3900.

In addition, Sheriff Mike Chitwood authorized a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.
