SANFORD, Fla. – Free parking is a perk many visitors and business owners have come to expect in downtown Sanford. But that could change.
Sanford city leaders are expected to discuss the possibility of introducing paid parking in downtown during a meeting Monday.
The idea is already getting mixed reactions from people who live, work and spend time downtown.
Jacob York, a Sanford resident, said he believes most people prefer the current system.
“I think the people like it the way it is,” York said. “You know, free parking.”
York said charging for parking could also hurt local businesses.
“I think it’s better for business if you start charging people,” he said.
Wilsa DeLeon said she was surprised to hear the city could consider charging for parking.
“It is shocking. It’s like, what else are we going to pay for?” DeLeon said.
DeLeon said rising costs are already putting pressure on residents and visitors.
“I’d like to come here and just enjoy, you know, free parking,” she said. “And if that’s changing, how much is it going to cost us?”
What parking looks like now
Parking throughout downtown Sanford is currently free.
Visitors can park for free for up to two hours in designated spaces along the sidewalks between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m.
There are also several free parking lots throughout downtown.
The only paid parking News 6 found in the area is associated with electric vehicle charging stations. In that case, drivers are paying for the charging service rather than simply paying to park in the space.
One downtown business owner told News 6 that paid parking could also create an issue for employees, who would potentially have to pay to park while working.
The city has not yet announced a final plan for paid parking. For now, the idea remains a discussion among city leaders.
