ORLANDO, Fla. — Households affected by Hurricanes Ian and Nicole are getting some help from the federal government after FEMA approved more than $18 million for flood insurance. As part of federal disaster assistance after Hurricane Ian and Hurricane Nicole, FEMA has approved 7,644 Florida households with group flood insurance policies for three years. According to a news release, eligible homeowners and renters will receive a notification from FEMA stating they have been included on a Group Flood Insurance Plan and will receive a Certificate of Flood Insurance. When the GFIP expires, the applicant is responsible for purchasing and maintaining flood insurance on their own. Failure to maintain flood insurance may result in the denial of future FEMA flood disaster assistance.

A tiger dam is orange tubes filled with ocean water stacked to create a barrier. Kay Eiler said that after the hurricane, the tiger dam will have a new solution if the next hurricane strikes again. Atlantic hurricane season ends with average number of storms
MIAMI — (AP) — An Atlantic hurricane season with 14 named storms officially ended Wednesday, though residents of Florida and Puerto Rico will continue to deal with damage caused by Hurricanes Ian, Nicole and Fiona. The 2022 period had an unusually calm first half but made up for that with the three destructive hurricanes in the second half, ending with an average number of named storms. An average hurricane season has 14 named storms, seven hurricanes and three major hurricanes, forecasters said. Since 1950, only 1997 and 1961 had no named storms in August. With 150-mph (241-kmh) maximum sustained winds, Hurricane Ian tied for the fifth-strongest hurricane ever to make landfall in the U.S., officials said.

The damages from the Category 1 storm in Volusia County, home to Daytona Beach, exceeded those from the much stronger Hurricane Ian, which caused $377 million of damage in the county, officials said. Volusia County officials said that 29 single-family homes in Wilbur-by-the-Sea had damage and that 17 were deemed unsafe following Hurricane Nicole. In Daytona Beach Shores and New Smyrna Beach, two dozen multistory condo buildings have been evacuated and deemed unsafe by building inspectors. Daytona Beach Shore by far had the most property damage in the county, estimated at $370.3 million, according to the Volusia County Property Appraiser. It was followed by New Smyrna Beach at $51.1 million and Daytona Beach at $50 million.

All day Friday, locals stopped by the area to check out the building after local social media feeds were flooded with photos of the damge from the storm surge. “We are working diligently to reopen and look forward to seeing everyone as soon as possible,” the owner wrote in a Facebook post thanking the community for its concern. “I don’t remember it being as far down,” Hagan noted, pointing to the sand level between the building and the beach access ramp. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — (AP) — NASA's moon rocket needs only minor repairs after enduring a hurricane at the pad and is on track for its first test flight next week, a top official said Friday. The wind never exceeded the rocket’s design limits as Hurricane Nicole swept through Kennedy Space Center on Thursday, according to Free. Computer models indicate there should be no strength or fatigue issues from the storm, even deep inside the rocket, Free noted. The 322-foot (98-meter) rocket, known as SLS for Space Launch System, is the most powerful ever built by NASA. NASA wants to test all the systems before putting astronauts on board in 2024 for a trip around the moon.

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — The man and woman who died after being electrocuted by a downed powerline in Orange County during Hurricane Nicole were twin siblings, their father told Channel 9. Their father identified the twins as Khalil and Kiana Sapp. Deputies said Khalil died after he got out of his car and made contact with a downed power line.
