ORLANDO, Fla. -- UCF will officially join the Big 12 on July 1 and ahead of their first football season in the conference, the Big 12 has released the schedule. After playing Kent State, Boise State (on the road) and Villanova to open the season, the Knights play their inaugural Big 12 game September 23 at Kansas State. ORLANDO, Fla. -- UCF has announced the hiring of Darin Hinshaw as its new offensive coordinator. Head coach Gus Malzahn also announced that Hinshaw will call the plays for the Knights as they get set to join the Big 12. He spent 2021 as an analyst for the Knights and this season, he spent his time as UAB’s offensive coordinator. Under his direction, the Blazers set program records for total yards, rushing yards, yards per game and rushing yards per game. The UCF Knights Baseball team had a historic day, as three players were taken by big league teams on the second day of the MLB Draft, the most taken in a draft since 1998. SS Alex Freeland, LHP Hunter Patteson and RHP Connor Staine were taken by the Los Angeles Dodgers, Kansas City Royals and Colorado Rockies respectively in the first five rounds of the 2022 MLB Draft. During his tenure as a Knight, Freeland had a batting average of .285 and collected 18 homers, 75 RBI and 103 hits overall. Playing in only one season with the Knights, Staine pitched a 1.87 ERA striking out 51 batters. With three more Knights drafted this year, the UCF Baseball program has now had 114 players drafted by MLB teams.

UCF reached an agreement with the American Athletic Conference to compete for one more season before transitioning its membership to the Big 12 Conference starting in 2023. The Knights’ transition to the Big 12 became official when AAC Commissioner Mike Aresco announced that the American had reached an agreement about the university’s departure to move to the Big 12. “UCF teams in the American have produced many championships and other memorable moments. The 2022-23 athletics seasons will conclude a full decade for UCF in the AAC, and we are proud of the contributions we’ve made to grow and enhance the stature of the conference. “We are pleased that we were able to conclude these negotiations and now confirm our transition to Big 12 Conference membership for 2023-24.”UCF joins the University of Cincinnati and the University of Houston in their departure from the AAC to the Big 12 for the 2023-2024 athletic season.

After forcing a game 2 with a 9-8 win the UCF Baseball team fell 9-6 to Houston Cougars in the semifinals of the AAC Tournament. With the loss the Knights’ 2022 season came to an end. The Knights got off to a rough start to game 1 with Cougars, finding themselves in a 4-hold by the fourth inning. The Knights once again fell behind early, as Houston jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. With the loss, the Knights finished the 2022 season 35-25.

The UCF Baseball team advanced to Friday’s elimination game against the loser of the Houston and Memphis game tomorrow after defeating the Wichita State Shockers 12-4 Thursday afternoon. Noah Orlando then singled to Left Center to score Pena and Lex Boedicker for another two runs. UCF Head Coach Greg Lovelady said he thought his team delivered on offense tonight after what he described as a terrible performance in Tuesday’s 6-7 loss against the Memphis Tigers. “They came ready to go.”The Knights will play the loser of game eight of tournament play between Houston and Memphis on Friday. UCF will take the mound approximately 47 minutes after the 1pm game Friday at Baycare Ballpark in Clearwater FL.

UCF Softball Head Coach Cindy Ball-Malone said she is proud of the fight shown this weekend, sweeping all three of their matchups in the Orlando Regional which included a 3-2 win over the Wolverines in 11 innings on Saturday. I’m super proud of these women and what they’ve done and the odds that they’ve fought against. With the Victory, the Knights at 49 wins for the season and one behind a program high of 50 set in 2015. UCF is also now .500 all-time in the NCAA Tournament going 16-16 after Sunday’s win.
