ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – Orange County Convention Center Executive Director Mark Tester said more than a dozen conventions and events have relocated to the OCCC, with a busy summer ahead. According to Tester, spring and summer sporting events at the convention center are estimated to bring in about $123 million with more than 95,000 attendees. Keep in mind, while events and conferences are underway, the convention center is still a regional COVID-19 testing site and vaccination center. The convention center has also undergone some renovations, deep cleaning and reorganization. Tester said he is expecting the convention center to go back to full capacity sometime in June or July.

Seminole County Emergency Manager Alan Harris said demand for a vaccine is still high, especially since the governor lowered the eligibility age to 50 on Monday. ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – Employees of any law enforcement, corrections and fire departments will be able to get the coronavirus vaccine at the Orange County Convention Center site beginning this week, Mayor Jerry Demings said Monday. The Orange County mayor said this happened after he submitted a request to the Florida Department of Emergency Management on Friday asking to be able to vaccinate these workers. At OCFL.net/vaccine there is no age requirement listed now for K-12 teachers, child care workers or law enforcement and fire department employees. Firefighters, paramedics and canvassers contracted by the county are working to identify vulnerable neighborhoods with people who want to get the shots. Dr. Raul Pino, Orange County health officer with the Florida Department of Health, said the county had 3,000 appointments for shots this week and there are still times available as of Monday evening.

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – For the first time since Orange County’s tourism development tax collection hit rock bottom during the pandemic, Comptroller Phil Diamond said January’s numbers did not increase like the previous months but instead took a downturn. Speaking from the Orange County Convention Center on Monday, Diamond announced the latest tourism development tax, or TDT, dollar intake for January, which is collected from hotel, resort and motel stays. This is the lowest amount the county had collected in tourism tax dollars in any December since 2005, according to the TDT report. “That shows that the business community has confidence and optimism about Orange County, to long term economic outlook,” Diamond said.
