VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – All lanes of Interstate 95 were temporarily shut down in Volusia County on Sunday due to multiple brush fires, according to the Florida Department of Transportation.
The closure was put in place before 1:30 p.m. in the area of mile marker 256 (State Road 421), about 6 miles away from where the Daytona 500 is taking place at Daytona International Speedway.
All lanes of the interstate were reopened, according to the Florida Highway Patrol, which was welcomed news for drivers hitting the highway after the Daytona 500 concluded.
According to Volusia County, fire crews were working four small brush fires along I-95 in Port Orange and Daytona Beach on Sunday. The fire that caused the closure on I-95 was caused by a burning vehicle, according to FDOT.
Daytona Beach fire crews say one of the brush fires, at a campground near the Daytona Flea and Farmers Market on Tomoka Farms Road, was fast-moving and wind-driven. It was two acres in size, but the fire burned 20 to 30 vehicles in the area.
The fire is now out.
