New Yorkers have been flooding into Florida. Here’s where they moved to

Orange County ranks 4th on list

Welcome to Florida sign.

The Sunshine State has been a popular destination for many across the U.S. — and New York is no exception.

In fact, 2022 U.S. Census Bureau data shows that New York and California were the two top states for migrants coming into Florida.

Much of this surge happened following the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic, which prompted many to move to Florida thanks to its relaxed policies in an era of lockdowns.

But even before the pandemic, the most recent USCB data — between 2016 and 2020 — shows that Florida received over 60,000 new residents from New York by the end of that timeframe.

South Florida was a destination hotspot, with many New York migrants moving to Palm Beach, Miami-Dade and Broward counties.

However, Central Florida saw its own share of transplants, with Orange, Osceola and Polk counties seeing the bulk in the region.

The top 10 counties that served as destinations for these New Yorkers were as follows:

Meanwhile, over 20,000 people left the state during this timeframe, meaning that Florida had approximately 38,500 net migrants from New York between 2016 and 2020.

Many of the counties that saw a large number of people move to New York were also the hit destinations, including Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties.

On the flipside, the top counties in Central Florida that saw outbound migration toward New York were Orange, Volusia and Seminole counties.
