VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – Leaders in Volusia County are set to meet Tuesday to approve a $1 million project to help rebuild several beach walkovers.
News 6 spoke to Jessica Fentress with the Volusia County Costal Division, who explained nearly a dozen walkovers will need repairs following Hurricanes Ian and Nicole.
Some walkovers have signs that read “ADA access currently unavailable” because of how bad the damage is at these locations.
There is a chance to fix the walkovers if county leaders give the green light to move forward with construction at Tuesday’s council meeting.
“Our trades workers did repairs we got stairs temporarily in place to make sure that our public access was available, but we just didn’t have accessibility to make them ADA accessible,” Jessica Fentress, Volusia County Costal Division said.
The county has been waiting for the Federal Emergency Management Agency to fund the majority of the project.
The project is set to cost over $1 million, with plans to begin repairs at the end of turtle nesting season in November if the county approves.
“In order to be fiscally responsible with our residents’ taxes, then we have to make sure that every single penny we get from FEMA we get it and unfortunately, that means playing by FEMA’s rules,” Fentress said.
The county says the repairs should be completed by spring 2025.
