Former Cocoa police officer gets 7 years in prison for standoff with SWAT team

Patrick Kelly held ex against her will, fire hundreds of rounds through home, prosecutors say

VIERA, Fla. – The police officer prosecutors said held his a woman against her will while shooting hundreds of rounds through their home was sentenced to seven years in prison.

Former Cocoa officer Patrick Kelly took that plea deal in court Monday.

Previously, the 41-year-old was facing life for his kidnapping with a firearm charge.

In a 2023 bond hearing Judge denies bond for Cocoa officer accused in hourslong standoff at Viera home, the victim told the court Kelly threatened to kill her, her son, his boss at Cocoa PD, and the SWAT team that showed up.

“I was terrified,” she said. “And he said, ‘I’m gonna kill every single [expletive] that shows up here tonight.’”

Kelly was a Cocoa police officer for 15 years until prosecutors said he barricaded himself with his ex at Arrivas Village in Viera.

A neighbor in December of 2022 shared video of the standoff.

And leading up to Monday’s plea, News 6 also obtained video from the state attorney’s office when Kelly finally surrendered.

A deputy can be heard asking Kelly if he’s alright to which Kelly answers, “Yes, sir.”

While slumped over in the back of the deputy’s car, Kelly also apologized.

“I [expletive] up,” he said. “I’m sorry.”

Prosecutors said Kelly fired hundreds of rounds through the home.

The sheriff’s office never returned fire, and the victim said she escaped when Kelly dropped shotgun shells on the floor.

Judge Crawford said Kelly terrorized the neighborhood.

By being adjudicated guilty and sentenced to seven years in prison, Kelly was fingerprinted and then returned to jail.

Since his arrest, he’s been in custody in Seminole County, because with his career in law enforcement, Kelly knew inmates that were in jail in Brevard.

Kelly will get credit for the time he’s already spent behind bars which means of that seven-year sentence, he’ll actually spend about five years in prison.

After that, for six years, he’ll be on probation.

After court Monday, the victim told News 6 reporter James Sparvero she supports the sentence.
