NHC highlights area near Florida for possible tropical development

20% chance of development in the next 7 days

ORLANDO, Fla. – An area stretching from the eastern Gulf to the coast of the Carolinas is starting to gain more attention as chances grow for slow development into the weekend.

The National Hurricane Center is now highlighting an area in the northeastern Gulf where a low-pressure system is expected to form by this weekend. Slow development is possible as the area moves slowly northeast toward the northeastern Gulf and possibly near the southeastern U.S. coast early next week.

Right now, development chances remain low. The National Hurricane Center gives the area near a 0% chance of forming over the next 48 hours and a 20% chance of development over the next seven days.

EURO models are picking up signals that a weak low could develop near the Big Bend and cross over into the Atlantic by early next week.

While conditions could allow for some gradual organization, there are still many details that remain uncertain, including how much it could develop and exactly where it may track.

For now, there are no immediate impacts expected for Central Florida, but this is an area Floridians should continue to watch.

This type of setup is not unusual for this time of year. During the first half of hurricane season, areas of low pressure can occasionally develop closer to home, often along leftover boundaries from old fronts, like the one we are watching now.

Typical July development
