ORLANDO, Fla. – A striking change in Florida law is lighting up the rear ends of some of the state’s largest firetrucks — literally.
As of July 1, 2024, a new law passed during that year’s legislative session now allows certain fire department vehicles to display blue lights on the back of the vehicle, marking a significant shift from previous policy in which only law enforcement and certain correctional vehicles were authorized to use blue lights.
Under the new legislation, government-owned firetrucks with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of over 24,000 pounds are now permitted to use blue lighting at the rear of the vehicle. However, this isn’t automatic as each vehicle must receive authorization from the department’s fire chief before the lights can be added.
The goal is to improve visibility and safety, especially during emergency responses in low-visibility conditions or on high-speed roadways.
This law is part of a growing recognition that enhanced lighting on emergency vehicles can prevent collisions and provide a clearer signal to motorists approaching scenes where crews are actively working.
