CHI-CHI’S Mexican restaurant chain to return after nearly 20 years

Locations expected to open in 2025

CHI-CHI’S, the Mexican restaurant chain born in Minnesota, is set to make a comeback nearly 20 years after initially closing down.

In a release, company officials announced that the chain is returning thanks to a new agreement with Hormel Foods, the owner of CHI-CHI’S trademarks.

The deal allowed Michael McDermott, the son of CHI-CHI’S founder, to use the name on physical restaurant locations, officials added. Those locations are expected to open in 2025.

“Although there has not been a CHI-CHI’S™ restaurant in the United States in 20 years, McDermott believes the brand holds a special place in the hearts of those who remember its heyday and remains popular among consumers nationwide who enjoy its packaged salsas, tortillas, and seasonings, which will continue to be available as new restaurant locations open,” the release reads.

The chain originally got its start when it was founded by restauranteur Marno McDermott and former Green Bay Packers player Max McGee in 1975, eventually growing to over 200 locations across the U.S.

But according to CBS News, CHI-CHI’s died out in 2004 after suffering from bankruptcy and a hepatitis A outbreak at one of its locations near Pittsburgh, which caused four people to die and nearly 600 more to fall ill.

“I still have fond memories of growing up in the CHI-CHI’S™ restaurants that my father built throughout their time, instilling in me the passion and determination to pursue my own career in the restaurant industry,” Michael McDermott said. “We have seen the impact our restaurant has had on individuals and families across the country and believe there is a strong opportunity to bring the brand back in a way that resonates with today’s consumer – an updated dining experience with the same great taste and Mexican flavor.”

No additional information has been provided at this time, including where the new locations will be opened.
