KISSIMMEE, Fla. – A popular out-of-state Mexican restaurant chain is set to make its debut in the Sunshine State later this year with a new location in Central Florida.

According to company officials, District Taco is planning to bring its premiere location to 2924 N. Orange Blossom Trail in Kissimmee.

The chain stems back to 2009 when a couple of neighbors “got together over some homemade chips, salsa and guacamole” before deciding to launch District Taco as a food truck, the company’s website reads. From there, District Taco grew to occupy several locations in and around Washington, D.C.

Nowadays, the chain boasts 18 different restaurants in the northeastern U.S., found in states like Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

As such, this is expected to be District Taco’s first foray into not only Florida, but the Southern states, too.

“We are known for our fully customizable, build-your-own menu and our bold flavors, inspired by traditional Yucatán ingredients and recipes,” said Mike Bueno, District Taco’s vice president of marketing. “We focus on authenticity and freshness, and prepare most of our items like salsas, guacamole, and grilled items daily.”

Bueno told News 6 that District Taco is targeting Q2 this year for the Kissimmee opening, likely sometime in June or July.

To celebrate the grand opening, the company plans to offer giveaways to guests on opening day, though more details are set to be released as that date approaches.

“(It’s) worth noting that it was a priority to have authentic, real materials as part of our designs — reclaimed barn wood will be used, tile wainscoting made in Mexico will line the store, and real brick will give the space a warmth, bringing the best of the Yucatán to our stores!” Bueno added.

But this is just a first step for the company into Florida, Bueno noted.

He explained that the chain is looking for new sites in the Orlando market, with potential plans for four or five other locations in the area. From there, the company is considering expanding to other parts of the state, with the Tampa-St. Petersburg market being the next in line.
