Step 1

Buy your opener. Every opener is a little different but operates the same way – it syncs with your garage door opener motor (just like the garage door remotes you keep in your car) and sends a signal to open or close. Most motors make their own keypads. We bought a universal opener at Ace (listed above) so we wouldn’t have any compatibility problems.

Step 2

Determine the mounting location. Usually, most homeowners install the keypad just outside the garage door on the wall but you can put it anywhere as long as it’s close enough to the garage door motor to send the open/close signal.

Step 3

Use the instructions to program. These are a life-saver, you cannot install without the instructions, because every opener is different. The instructions will walk you through programming which includes finding your opener motor and brand and the “learn” button on the motor. The instructions will explain, based on your particular motor, what the programming sequence is, when to push the “learn” button, and the codes to type into the keypad. This may take a few tries but it should work if you get the programming sequence right.

Step 4

Mount the keypad on the wall. If your wall is block, you’ll have to drill holes with a concrete drill bit and use concrete anchors to screw in the screws (through the keypad of course to hold it to the wall).

Step 5

Test it. Make sure you got the programming right.

Enjoy your new keypad! You just got results at home!
